Cock-a-doodle-do. As you might imagine, since "Year of the Cock" was published in July, I've received many, many loving and laudatory letters from readers. But this, from a woman named "PJ," is my favorite to date. Actually, in fairness, I'm not 100% sure that PJ is a lady, but I have to assume so, because the idea of dude, any dude, taking the time to write such a missive plunges me into irretrievable despair. That said, the above photo is of course not an actual portrait of PJ but rather an accurate representation of what PJ looks like in my mind as I read her letter.

Dear Allan,
I finished reading your book and just as you were compelled and obsessed to pull on your cock, I feel compelled to write you and tell you a few things.
Number one: You are a raving alcoholic and it's fortunate you haven't killed anybody yet. Of course, if you killed just yourself, the world would miss nothing.
Two: You deserve all the hurt that has been inflicted on you, as it is just a small portion of what you did to others.
Three: You admit your psychological shortcomings, some of which were inflicted by your old man, this is a step in the right direction. However, your purported love for your son Roman, is certainly questionable. Why would you write such a graphic, bordering-on-pornographic book for him to read someday? Why would you want him to read what a screwed-up human being you are? To me, this is your biggest sin.
I hope you turn your life around and atone for your misdeeds. But most of all, I hope Roman has a mentally healthy life.

Dear PJ,
I had no hand in screwing up Alan and your reading of his book seems to me, to be the ravings of a misguided, frustrated haridan who needs to reevaluate her own perceptions of reality and who totally missed the point of the book. I suggest you stick to reading Danielle Steele novels, more suited to your stultified intellect. DSW
